Cruising is a fun and fantastic time. However, it’s not a time to forget your manners. Here are seven cruise ship do’s and don’ts.
1. Do tip the staff. You’ll want to tip not only your wait staff but also your hard-working steward. A steward’s tip is generally $3-$4 per day you’re on board. Wait staff can be tipped nightly or at the end of the trip and again it’s around $3-4 per day.
2. Don’t save seats. One of the biggest complaints or nuisances on board a cruise is the person who saves a group of seats for meals, for shows, and around the pool or on deck. Worse may be the person who tosses their belongings on a deck lounge to essentially “save” it for when they want to use it later.
3. Do pay attention to the dress code. Each cruise line will have their own dress code and may have special occasions where dress code is formal. Please adhere to the dress code. If you’ve gone through the effort to pack your best cocktail dress and dress up, it’s inconsiderate for others to show up in jeans and a t-shirt. If you prefer a casual cruise, there are many to choose from.
4. Don’t smoke. Many cruises now prohibit smoking or they allow it only in specified areas. Because smoking is such a sensitive issue for some, it’s only considerate to follow the cruise guidelines.
5. Do watch your children. A cruise can be a dangerous place for children. Not only are there water dangers in the pool; there are also strangers on board. Children shouldn’t be allowed to roam free without adult supervision and they should certainly be on their best behavior when in a formal or dining situation. There are child-friendly cruises and if you have children, you may want to find a cruise with lots of fun things for your children to do and understanding parents around who can empathize if you’re dealing with unruliness.
6. Do respect your neighbors. The cabins on a cruise aren’t soundproof. Loud music and televisions, door slamming and early morning or late night noise can all be extremely disruptive to the people around you.
7. Do be patient and follow instructions. If you’re participating in an activity, going to a show, or even just waiting in line for a meal, please be patient and listen to and follow the instructions. Cruises are extremely organized and pleasant events when everyone is relaxed and considerate.
A cruise will be most enjoyable if everyone remembers to relax. It’s a vacation and everyone on board is also on vacation. Be courteous, remember your manners and help everyone have a great time.
